I know, I know...me?...posting about...Burt Bacharach? Okay...just hear me out.
Marc just bought Burt Bacharach's 2005 vinyl LP "At This Time" and I gotta say...I am now a TOTAL FREAKIN' BURT BACHARACH FAN. When I played it in the store today, people asked what was that smooth and incredible album...and the inevitable response was "Huh??? Burt Bacharach??? No way!" I'm telling ya...it's awesome.
I think it's time he got some props again. I actually can't think of a more talented and prolific song writer from the 20th century. I mean, you have to appreciate someone with these to his credit. My God! Just look at this list!
"The Story of My Life"
"Magic Moments"
"The Blob"
"Heavenly"
"Faithfully"
"Baby It's You"
"Any Day Now"
"Liberty Valance"
"Only Love Can Break A Heart"
"Don't Make Me Over"
"Make it Easy On Yourself"
"Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa"
"Blue on Blue"
"Anyone Who Had a Heart"
"Close to You"
"Wives and Lovers"
"Wishin' and Hopin'"
"Walk on By"
"I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself"
"Always Something There to Remind Me"
"A House Is Not a Home"
"What the World Needs Now Is Love"
"What's New Pussycat?"
"Alfie"
"My Little Red Book"
"I Say A Little Prayer"
"The Look of Love"
"One Less Bell to Answer"
"This Guy's in Love with You"
"Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" )
"Promises, Promises"
"Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"
"I'll Never Fall in Love Again"
"Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do)"
"That's What Friends Are For"
"On My Own"
Holy crap! Did this guy single-handedly write almost every single freakin' pop song that hit the charts in the 60s??? Apparently. Just his catalog of stuff with Dionne Warwick is amazing enough. I think that just enough time has passed to avert the Bacharach stigma and just appreciate how beautiful his body of work really was.
And then he puts out an album in 2005 that is one of the smoothest grooves ever. Fo shizzle.
I think my perception of Burt Bacharch was clouded by those cheesy Martini & Rossi commercials he did with his then-wife Angie Dickinson.
Elvis Costello (who, in my opinion is probably the most brilliant rock and roll song writer ever) respected and adored him. This is EC's cover of "I'll Never Fall In Love Again"
