I'm sure that part of the reason that I really dig Halloween is because of the comics that were out in the late sixties/early seventies when I was a kid. Granted, I liked Batman, Superman, The Fantastic Four, and even Richie Rich...but for me, the real pot of gold was when the horror comics appeared at Belvoir Drug Store when I was a kid. I would save up my allowance, race down the blocks on my bike and make sure I snagged the horror comics the second they hit the stands every month or so.

Creepy Magazine...out every two months in the late sixties/early seventies. The Holy Grail of horror comics! This was the original domain of the Crypt Keeper after all...sometimes even with vague illustrations of butts and titties. How cool was THAT to a kid in the late sixties/early seventies? (Very)

Famous Monsters of Filmland...awesome early seventies mag. It came out once a month when I was a kid, then publication dropped off to two or three times a years after that. Scarey...graphic..and awesome to my early seventies eyes. This is going to sound really silly, but I even wrote a letter to the publisher when I was 10 years old, asking them to let me know when another issue was coming out.

Ok...I was a wierd kid.

Eerie Magazine...well...Eerie was sorta the budget version of Creepy Magazine back then. It was 60 cents, and Creepy was 75 cents. Those weeks when I was short on allowance, I would buy Eerie instead of Creepy. It was still scarey and cool, but not nearly as scarey and cool as Creepy Magazine. (Even at 10 years old, I already had a keen appreciation for production value...what a fag) LOL
Happy Halloween...and I hope you 40something boys out there got a kick out of this trip down memory lane.
